What is a budget?

The meaning

A plan for how you’ll spend your money each month. Not a punishment, just a way to make sure your spending is actually lined up with what you want. Without one, most people have no idea where their money is going. If traditional budgets haven’t stuck for you, check out reverse budgeting for a different approach.

Walk through the numbers

You take home $4,000 a month. Rent is $1,400, bills $600, food $600, other spending $800, and you send $600 to savings and investing. Every dollar has a job.

Why it matters

A budget is how you find the money to invest in the first place, and it shows which costs your investments could cover first.
